(00:00) The best parts from the full "Best of RaTox" podcast are available here, do watch it. Since the topic of urine came up, I wanted to talk about urinary infections, specifically things like ( UTI). Actually, to what extent do the urinary places we visit—like Sulabh complexes, public toilets, or even using the washrooms in theaters—cause these infections due to the smell or hygiene? So, there are some doubts about this.
(00:29) Basically, it's a natural doubt about the places we visit. This is a very common doubt. A lady comes in , she is about 40 years old. She says, "I went to the mall recently, I couldn't hold it, I used the bathroom there, and ever since then, I have a burning sensation while urinating." This is a very common way of thinking; people ask, "If I use a dirty bathroom, will I get a urinary infection?" That is not true.
(00:53) Using a dirty bathroom will not give you a urinary infection. Hmm. The infection happens because you hold it in for a long time when you need to urinate, thinking the bathroom is dirty ; that is what causes the infection. Okay. So, not using the bathroom will cause you an infection; not using the bathroom.
(01:12) Right. This is especially more common in ladies; basically, if you look at it, it doesn't apply to both genders—it's not the same for males and females. Because the urinary tract in a male and the urinary tract in a female, specifically the lower part, are different. Um. What it is, is that in ladies, in women , the urethra is shorter.
(01:36) Yes. So the tract... The bacteria in that tract don't come from the bathroom or the commode seat as you might think. The bacteria are already there, in our own bodies. They are near our anus, near our vagina , and around the urinary tract. So, the bacteria there are most of the time what we call commensals—they just stay there normally; they aren't really harming you.
(01:58) There are bacteria on our skin and in our mouths too; are they giving us infections? No, they are commensals. Most of the time they remain in that commensal state. What happens is that sometimes some bacteria go from the urethra into the bladder, and they come out when you pass urine. So, this process is always happening; there is a cleaning process that goes on.
(02:17) That's right. But, especially talking about women, whenever you don't pass urine for four or five hours... You are fasting, you haven't drunk water, and you haven't felt the urge to urinate. Or, you felt the urge but you held it in and didn't go for a long time. Due to a lack of possibility. You are traveling or at a mall and didn't go, so it's the same thing— whether you hold it in or it wasn't produced at all, the result is the same if you don't pass urine.
(02:41) So, the bacteria that went inside might get activated and have a chance to cause an infection. So... Why do some people get it and others don't? There are many reasons for that. In every stage of a lady's life—from when menstruation starts, which we call menarche, to marriage, pregnancy, and menopause—there are many hormonal changes occurring in their bodies.
(03:09) These hormonal changes will dictate whether the existing bacteria should remain or if new ones should take their place. So, this bacterial population is in a constant process of change. For instance, when menstruation occurs, the vagina gets completely cleansed. As it clears out the existing bacteria and antibodies, new bacteria begin to colonize.
(03:31) This process happens day in and day out, often without us even realizing it. During this time, if certain bacteria proliferate, or if there is a mild vaginal infection, and if one holds urine for too long, the bacteria can travel into the bladder and potentially cause an infection. Therefore, we emphasize "toilet training," especially for those prone to frequent urinary infections.
(03:58) It's not about what kind of toilet you use, but rather teaching you to empty your bladder frequently. By emptying the bladder frequently, you can prevent recurrent infections. It is not caused by using a dirty toilet, as is commonly thought. There is a lot of complexity, especially regarding urinary infections in females, because there is a different underlying cause for every decade of their lives.
(04:32) There is a specific reason for infections at every stage, so we need to adjust their habits and address their problems based on the situation. That is not the case with males; infections in men do not occur in this manner. If there is an infection, there is definitely a reason for it. There are different reasons for young men, and different ones for those over 50.
(04:59) So, for a male with a urinary infection, the idea of "using a bathroom" being the cause is simply not possible. Right. Right, men should not get urinary infections. If they do, there is definitely a reason, and that cause must be found. Right. Whether it's in men or in children. Even in young children. Thanks for watching the clip.
