  *4 జూలై, 1902*

 ఒక గొప్ప ఆత్మ మహాసమాధిలోకి వెళ్లిపోయే రోజు అది.  స్వామి వివేకానంద, కమాండింగ్ తెలివి మరియు శక్తి యొక్క ఆధ్యాత్మిక మేధావి, అతను తన స్వల్ప జీవితంలో అపారమైన శ్రమను మరియు విజయాన్ని పొందాడు.  అతను 39 సంవత్సరాల 5 నెలల వయస్సులో రాత్రి 9:20 గంటలకు మహాసమాధిని పొందాడు, "నేను 40 సంవత్సరాల వరకు జీవించను" అనే తన స్వంత ప్రవచనాన్ని నెరవేర్చాడు.

 తన మహాసమాధికి కేవలం 3 రోజుల ముందు, స్వామి తన శిష్యుడైన స్వామి ప్రేమానందను, బేలూరు మఠం మైదానంలో ఒక నిర్దిష్ట ప్రదేశాన్ని చూపాడు, అక్కడ అతను తన మృతదేహాన్ని దహనం చేయాలని కోరుకున్నాడు మరియు ఇలా చెప్పాడు. 

 "ఒక గొప్ప తపస్సు మరియు ధ్యానం నాపైకి వచ్చింది, నేను మరణానికి సిద్ధమవుతున్నాను."

 మరుసటి రోజు, బుధవారం, అతను ఏకాదశిని జరుపుకున్నాడు.  ఉపవాసం తరువాత, స్వామీజీ కొన్ని పండ్లు మరియు కూరగాయలు కలిగి, అతను చేతులు మీద నీరు పోసుకుని మరియు తువ్వాలుతో వాటిని ఆరబెట్టాడు.  ‘యేసు తన శిష్యుల పాదాలు కడిగాడు’ అని ఆయన శిష్యులు నిరసించినప్పుడు, ఒకరు సమాధానాన్ని తనిఖీ చేసి, ‘అయితే అదే చివరిసారి’ అని గొణుగుతున్నారు... ఆయన మాటలు చెప్పకుండానే మిగిలిపోయాయి.

 అతని చివరి రోజు ఇతర సాధారణ రోజులానే ఉంది.

 అత్యున్నత రోజైన శుక్రవారం, స్వామిజీ పొద్దున్నే నిద్రలేచి ధ్యానం కోసం మందిరానికి వెళ్లారు.  ఇతర రోజులలా కాకుండా అతను తన ధ్యానాన్ని పూర్తి చేయడానికి ఎక్కువ సమయం తీసుకున్నాడు.  వద్ద తన ధ్యానం ముగించిన తర్వాత 

 ఉదయం 11:00 (స్వామీజీ 3 గంటలు ధ్యానంలో గడిపారు)

  అతను బయటకు వెళ్లి కాళీమాతకి పూజ ఏర్పాటు చేయమని తన శిష్యులను కోరాడు. 

 తర్వాత గుసగుసలాడాడు, *‘ఇంకొక వివేకానంద ఉంటే ఈ వివేకానందుడు ఏం చేశాడో అర్థం అయ్యేది!  ఇంకా ఎంతమంది వివేకానందులు కాలంలో పుడతారు!’*

  స్వామీజీ తన శిష్యుడైన శుద్ధానందను యజుర్వేదం నుండి ఒక ప్రసిద్ధ వివరణకర్త యొక్క వ్యాఖ్యానంతో చదవమని అడిగాడు.  స్వామివారు వ్యాఖ్యాతతో ఏకీభవించలేదని, వేద గ్రంథాలకు కొత్త భాష్యం చెప్పమని శిష్యుడిని ఉద్బోధించారు.

 మధ్యాహ్నం, అతను సాధారణంగా తన అనారోగ్యం కారణంగా ఒంటరిగా భోజనం చేసినప్పటికీ, మఠం సభ్యులతో కలిసి హృదయపూర్వక భోజనం చేసాడు.  తర్వాత బ్రహ్మచారులకు 3 గంటల పాటు సంస్కృత వ్యాకరణం బోధించాడు.  తర్వాత మఠం మైదానంలో స్వామి ప్రేమానందతో కలిసి 2 మైళ్ల దూరం నడిచి, మఠంలో వేద కళాశాల ఏర్పాటు గురించి చర్చించారు.

 'వేద కళాశాల ఎందుకు' అని అడిగినప్పుడు, స్వామీజీ "మూఢ నమ్మకాలను చంపడానికి" అని బదులిచ్చారు.

 అతను తిరిగి వచ్చినప్పుడు మఠంలోని ప్రతి సభ్యుని గురించి ఆరా తీశాడు, దేశాల పెరుగుదల & పతనంపై వారితో చర్చించాడు.

  *"భారతదేశం అజరామరం, ఆమె భగవంతుని అన్వేషణలో పట్టుదలతో ఉంటే, కానీ ఆమె రాజకీయాలు మరియు సామాజిక సంఘర్షణల కోసం వెళితే, ఆమె చనిపోతుంది" అని ఆయన అన్నారు.* 

 సాయంత్రం 7 గంటలకు అతను తన గదికి వెళ్లి తన అటెండర్‌ని డిస్టర్బ్ చేయవద్దని కోరాడు.  ఒక గంట ధ్యానం & జపం తర్వాత, అతను తన శిష్యులను అన్ని కిటికీలు తెరిచి తన తలకు ఫ్యాన్ చేయమని పిలిచాడు.  అతను నిశ్శబ్దంగా పడుకున్నాడు.  ఒక గంట తరువాత అతని చేతులు కొద్దిగా వణుకుతున్నాయి మరియు అతను రెండు నిమిషాల్లో రెండుసార్లు గట్టిగా ఊపిరి పీల్చుకున్నాడు.  అతని కళ్ళు అతని కనుబొమ్మల మధ్యలో స్థిరపడ్డాయి మరియు దైవిక వ్యక్తీకరణతో శాశ్వతమైన నిశ్శబ్దం పడిపోయింది.

 స్వామీజీ యొక్క ఒక సోదరుడు శిష్యుడు చెప్పాడు, ‘అతని ముక్కు రంధ్రాలలో, అతని నోటిలో మరియు అతని కళ్ళలో కొద్దిగా రక్తం ఉంది. 

 యోగ గ్రంధాల ప్రకారం, ప్రకాశించే యోగి యొక్క జీవ శ్వాస తల పైభాగంలో (సహస్రారం) ద్వారా బయటకు వెళుతుంది, దీని వలన నాసికా రంధ్రాలు మరియు నోటిలో రక్తం ప్రవహిస్తుంది.  సోదర శిష్యులు అతను సమాధిలో పడి ఉండవచ్చని భావించారు మరియు అతని స్పృహను తిరిగి తీసుకురావడానికి గురువు నామాన్ని జపించారు.  కానీ అతను కదలకుండా వీపుపైనే ఉండిపోయాడు. వైద్యులను పంపారు & క్షుణ్ణంగా పరీక్షించిన తర్వాత డాక్టర్ 'జీవితం సస్పెండ్ చేయబడింది' అని అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు మరియు కృత్రిమ శ్వాసక్రియను ప్రయత్నించారు.  అర్ధరాత్రి అపోప్లెక్సీ లేదా గుండె ఆకస్మిక వైఫల్యం కారణంగా అతను చనిపోయినట్లు ప్రకటించారు.

 మొదటినుంచీ తన మాస్టారు చెప్పిన క్షణం వచ్చింది.  ఆ ధ్యానం యొక్క రెక్కల మీద రాత్రి 9:20 గంటలకు, *అతని ఆత్మ ఎక్కడ నుండి ఎగబాకింది* *తిరిగి రాలేనంత* *ఆ శరీరం భూమిపై ముడుచుకున్న వస్త్రంలా మిగిలిపోయింది.  ఇది* *నిర్వికల్ప* *సమాధి* గురించి ఆయన గురువైన రామకృష్ణ పరమహంస తనకు చెప్పారు... “ఇది నీ మామిడిపండు, చూడు!  నేను దానిని నా పెట్టెలో లాక్ చేస్తాను.  మీ పని పూర్తయిన తర్వాత మీరు దీన్ని మరోసారి రుచి చూడాలి.  మరియు అతను వేచి ఉన్నాడు, అతను ఇలా చెప్పడానికి తన సమయం ఆసన్నమైందని అతనికి తెలుసు.

 రాబోయే శతాబ్దాల వరకు ప్రతిచోటా ప్రజలు స్వామి వివేకానంద సందేశానికి స్ఫూర్తిని పొందుతారు,

  *‘ఓ మనిషి!  * *బ్రాహ్మణం- అహం* *బ్రహ్మాస్మితో ఒక్కటే అని ముందుగా గ్రహించండి, ఆపై* *మొత్తం* *విశ్వం* *నిజంగా ఒకటే* *బ్రహ్మం — సర్వం* *ఖల్విదం బ్రహ్మ.’*

 *4th of July, 1902*

It was the day a great soul would pass away into Mahasamadhi. Swami Vivekananda, a spiritual genius of commanding intellect and power who crammed immense labor and achievement into his short life. He obtained Mahasamadhi at 9:20pm at the age of 39 years and 5 months fulfilling his own prophecy “I shall not live to be 40 years old”.

Just 3 days before his Mahasamadhi, Swami pointed out to his disciple Swami Premananda, a particular spot on Belur Math grounds where He wished his body to be cremated and  said 

“A great tapasya and meditation has come upon me, and I am making ready for death.”

Next day, Wednesday, he observed Ekadashi. After fasting, Swamiji had some fruits and vegetables, he poured water over hands & dried them with a towel. When his disciples protested he said ‘Jesus washed the feet of his disciples’, someone checked the answer & muttered ‘But that was the last time’… his words were left unuttered.

His last day was like any other normal day.

On the supreme day, Friday, Swamiji woke up early and went to the shrine for meditation. Unlike other days he took more time to complete his meditation. After finishing his meditation at 

11:00 am(Swamiji spent 3 hrs in meditation)

 he went out and asked his disciples to arrange a Puja for Mother Kali. 

Later he whispered, *‘If there were another Vivekananda, then he would have understood what this Vivekananda has done! And yet how many Vivekanandas shall be born in time!’*

 Swamiji asked his disciple Suddhananda to read a passage from the Yajurveda with the commentary of a well-known expositor. The Swami said that he did not agree with the commentator and exhorted the disciple to give a new interpretation of the Vedic texts.

In the afternoon, he enjoyed a hearty lunch with members of Math though he usually ate alone due to his illness. Then he taught Sanskrit grammar to the bramhacharis for 3 hrs. Later he walked for 2 miles with Swami Premamnanda within the Math grounds, discussing about a Vedic College setup in the Matha.

On being asked ‘Why a Vedic college’, Swamiji replied “to kill superstition”.

On his return enquired about each member of the Math, discussed with them on the Rise & Fall of Nations.

 *"India is immortal, if she persists in her search for God, but if she goes in for politics & social conflict, she will die",  He said.* 

At 7 pm he went to his room & asked his attendant not to be disturbed. After an hour of Dhyana & Japa, he called his disciples to open all windows & fan his head. He laid down quietly. An hour later his hands trembled a little and he breathed heavily twice in a couple of minutes. His eyes became fixed in the centre of his eyebrows and with a divine expression the eternal silence fell.

‘There was,’ said a brother disciple of the Swamiji, ‘a little blood in his nostrils, about his mouth, and in his eyes.’ 

According to the Yoga scriptures, the life-breath of an illumined yogi passes out through the opening on the top of the head( Sahasraram), causing the blood to flow in the nostrils and the mouth. The brother disciples thought that he might have fallen into samadhi, and chanted the Master’s name to bring back his consciousness. But he remained on his back motionless.The doctors were sent for & after a thorough examination the doctor opined ‘life was only suspended’ and artificial respiration was tried. At midnight he was pronounced dead by apoplexy or sudden failure of the heart.

The moment was there that had been foretold by his Master from the beginning. At 9:20pm on the wings of that meditation, *His spirit soared whence* *there could* *be no return, and the body was left, like a folded vestiture, on the earth. This is* *the Nirvikalpa* *Samadhi* that his Guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa told him about… “This is your mango, Look! I lock it in my box. You shall taste it once more, when your work is finished.” and he waited for He knew that his time was near for He said this.

For centuries to come people everywhere will be inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s message,

 *’O man! first realize that you are one with* *Brahman- aham* *Brahmasmi & then* *realize that the whole* *universe is* *verily the same* *Brahman — Sarvam* *Khalvidam Brahma.’*
