Title: How to Read a Book Properly | Read Less, Understand More | By Master Pradeep Vijay | #books #reading

Author Name: Pradeep Vijay Spiritual Academy

Description: We often think reading a book means finishing a certain number of pages. But good reading is not really about speed or quantity. It is about understanding what you read, finding the essence, and allowing that understanding to reflect in your own life.

In this session, Master Pradeep Vijay shares a simple approach to reading books with greater depth and awareness.

Before picking up a book, he recommends spending 10–15 minutes in meditation. A calmer and more focused mind can help you understand what you are reading more deeply and enjoy the process.

He also explains why it is important to look at both the micro and macro view...understanding the details of a chapter while also being able to recognise its larger message.

Reading is not about collecting excerpts or trying to remember everything. Instead, ask yourself what the most meaningful point was for you and what you would want to share with someone else.

The session also connects reading with mindfulness, self-discipline, journaling and spiritual growth. From mindful eating and drinking to developing willpower and reflecting through writing, these simple practices can gradually bring more awareness into everyday life.

There is also a deeper discussion on spiritual books, the importance of building a strong foundation, trusting the process, and what it means for a teacher to teach from experience rather than simply repeating what has been read.

In this video, you’ll discover:

Why meditation before reading can improve understanding
How to find the essence of a chapter
Why both the micro and macro view matter
Why reading deeply is more important than reading quickly

Take your time.

Find the essence.
Reflect on it.
And most importantly, bring that understanding into your life.

The real value of a book is not how many pages you have completed, but how deeply something from those pages has stayed with you.

(00:00) So even when you're eating a mango or when you're eating an apple, [music] you hold the fruit, touch it, feel the texture and feel gratitude that the [music] nature has given you this food and it is the gift of the mother nature. Let your maid cook the food and you cook the food and then eat. [music] Buy organic vegetables and cook.
(00:21) Buy normal vegetables and cook. See the taste difference. When you're drinking water, just drink water straight away and drink water mindfully, sip by sip, enjoying [music] the water with full of gratitude, totally being in the present moment. Mindfulness means being totally in the present moment and completely dedicated to what you are doing.
(00:43) Your body and mind in one place before you read any book. 10 to 15 minutes of meditation first. Hey friends, let us start the session. So today if you have any questions you may ask. >> Good evening masters my dear friends. I'm Joti Chandra Shaka from Bangalore. So my question is regarding uh this book reading I got doubt sir like in how many days or weeks should we complete one book or how it is sir? >> Okay.
(01:20) So you go ahead with at least one hour of reading. For example, you are reading one particular chapter. One chapter you are the chapter has 10 pages. >> So what is the essence of the chapter? >> There might be only two points which is the entire essence of it. So you write down only the essence of it. >> Okay? >> You don't need to write down stories and stories as a teacher.
(01:40) You need to get into the essence. See the micro view and macro view both are important. You should be able to say the story of Ramayana in one sentence and you should also be able to say the story of Ramayana in 10 days. So the micro and the macro is very important. So this book reading helps you you when you're reading you understand a lot of details and you will be able to reflect upon your own life circumstances.
(02:05) But at the same time what is the most important point for you to learn in that moment in this particular chapter. So you are not doing a a professional reading and getting the excerpts. I'm not expecting that. >> Okay. >> Okay. I'm not expecting you to extract the excerpts of the book. All I'm expecting is you have read the book but what is the most important point you felt.
(02:28) >> Okay. >> So those points you'll be writing an assignment >> like in the way we understand and get the knowledge while reading the book. That is important for >> imagine yourself as a teacher. >> Okay. Imagine yourself as a teacher. You are reading that book and what would you like to teach your students from that chapter.
(02:46) >> Okay, I got it. >> See from that point of view. >> Okay sir. >> Okay. >> Is that all? >> Yes sir. >> Okay. So next. >> Good evening sir. Good evening all. My name is Anusha. I'm from Mumbai. I would just like to know what is it that I should do or what change should I bring into myself for uh getting a steadiness of pace in any task performed.
(03:10) >> So your question relates to what we have explained about self- discipline. Every day you are going to practice mindfulness when you're eating food or when you're drinking juices or when you're drinking water. Anything that goes into the mouth you have to be mindful of. Whether it is drinking water or drinking any kind of juices or whether it is eating fruits or whether it is eating food any cooked food.
(03:37) So how to do this experiment? I'll tell you before you eat any food don't straight away eat the food for 2 minutes. Close your eyes and be with the breath. Just for 2 minutes close your eyes and be with the breath. Become fully aware of the breath. And after 2 minutes you start eating the food mindfully. Your entire focus should be on the eating process.
(04:01) How the food tastes, what is the taste buds feel like? What kind of flavors are there? So, what kind of aroma the food is having? And what kind of energy the food is having? And also do the experiment. Let your mate cook the food and you cook the food and then eat. You'll see the difference. Okay? Buy organic vegetables and cook. Buy normal vegetables and cook.
(04:25) See the taste and difference. When you're drinking water, just drink water straight away and drink water mindfully. Sip by sip enjoying the water with full of gratitude straight away drinking the water and drink mindfully sip by sip enjoying the water closing your eyes. Drink the water opening the eyes and drink the water closing the eyes.
(04:46) So do all kinds of experiments. Anything that goes into your mouth you experiment. Mindfulness. You start with food and you and you write down what is your experiment and what is your experiment result. One day I ate the food just thinking something else but another day I ate the food totally mindful. So what is the difference between these two and drinking the water mindfully if you feel that the water is thirsting quenching your thirst and the water is completely becoming part of you and the water is cleansing all the toxins from the body.
(05:23) So be mindful and feel the gratitude and drink the water and just [clears throat] straight away drink the water. See how it feels. Even when you are eating a mango, this is the mango season in India. So even when you're eating a mango or when you're eating an apple, you hold the fruit, touch it, feel the texture and feel gratitude that the nature has given you this food and it is the gift of the mother nature and with so much gratitude you eat the food and you see what is the effect what is the result of eating mindfulness and after
(05:57) you finish eating also the momentum you know is there you start continuing that feeling of joy when You eat mindfully. The joy is extended even after you finish eating. Mindful eating, mindful drinking, anything which goes into the mouth. You do all kinds of experiment. And if this becomes a habit in your life, it really helps you.
(06:20) It really helps you to become more aware. And whatever you eat, the nutrition completely is absorbed within the body and you don't overeat. It can be sipping a coffee or sipping a tea, anything. Sip it mindfully. Totally being in the present moment. Mindfulness means being totally in the present moment and completely dedicated to what you are doing. Your body and mind in one place.
(06:46) When you are drinking tea, you are drinking only tea. Nothing else you are doing. No thinking, no planning, nothing. Just your 100% awareness is only on the drinking the tea process. No conversation when you are eating food or drinking anything. In no conversation, you are fully silent. You're completely silent and enjoying the process.
(07:09) Experiment in every possible way. Experiment. And every day you have to experiment. Anytime you drink water, anytime you eat food, anything that goes into your mouth, you experiment. And sometimes you might fail. Sometimes you might not be mindful and know you might be busy in the meeting or suddenly you'll start drinking water.
(07:30) Catch hold of yourself and say, "Oh, I'm not mindful. the next time I will be mindful. Don't be too harsh on you. Just become aware and next time be more mindful. And you can write it down. Okay. The first two days I'm not really mindful but from the third day onwards I have become more mindful. Whatever is your experiment you write it down.
(07:47) The experiment result should be very straight to the point, neutral. When you practice this mindfulness, your energies are always high. You don't think you have wasted time or energy. So that is how you discipline yourself. And there is something called willpower. The more you practice mana, the more your willpower increases.
(08:03) The more you practice mindfulness, the more your willpower increases. The more you motivate yourself to do anything. See, once you have started something, you have to finish it. You cannot give up in the middle. Come what may, whatever might be the challenges, you keep dragging, but still that's fine. You keep moving forward forward.
(08:22) And when you finish the task what you have taken that gives an enormous willpower to do with greater enthusiasm the next project. And when you are lying down when you're going to bed just before you go to bed lie down in a very relaxed way just become conscious of your breath and let the sleep come naturally.
(08:43) You be aware of your breath. How the breath is going in and how the breath is coming out. Just become aware of the breath and let the sleep slowly slip in. You will feel the whole night you are very peaceful, very relaxed and you are recharged. So the next day you have more energy. >> Okay. Thank you sir. >> So the next one.
(09:02) >> Good evening masters. Uh my name is Mudra Rajan. Um I'm from Bangalore. I work for an IT firm. So my question is 10 books more of kind of higher syllabus like >> Okay. So you so I got your question. You don't need to be worried about it. See, the first and foremost is are you spending at least 1 hour per day.
(09:25) >> Yeah. Yes. >> 1 hour per day you spend with the book. How many pages you read doesn't matter. But that one hour you are sincere in reading that book. Different people have different speed. So how many pages you cover doesn't matter. How deeply you understand matters. >> I understand. >> Somebody has asked a question in the chat box like how to read properly.
(09:47) So I would say before you read any book 10 to 15 minutes of meditation first then you take the book so then what happens the the capacity to understand the book increases the depth of your understanding increases and you will start enjoying the process. So first minimum 10 to 15 minutes of meditation and then only you take the book and your book reading habit you are reading book every day 1 hour that matters how many pages you read doesn't matter but we expect you to make sure you read at least 1 hour per day in the beginning
(10:24) you might read very slow it might be only five six pages or 10 pages but as you are regularly reading what happens you start enjoying the reading process and you will naturally cover more pages and naturally you will start enjoying the process. >> Okay. >> Okay. And the more you read every single day, the more the self-reflection happens. It is a beautiful journey.
(10:48) Okay. So trust the process. That's why I said discipline. So focus on the discipline in the as part of the discipline 1 hour allocated to read books. So as long as you are sticking to that discipline naturally everything will flow. We will be going through a nice flow experience. How much you understand doesn't matter.
(11:09) How deep you understand matters. See there are few stages. In the first stage the quality matters. In the second stage the quantity matters because already you have mastered the quality. In the third stage both quality and quantity matters. But that should be very natural evolution. So first you focus on the quality.
(11:30) It is the quality which matters. Next, >> Anupama here from Bangalore. I also work for an IT company. Sir, uh the question I had is in terms of journaling, writing them in a book helps or just typing somewhere helps or what do you generally suggest practice? >> You should write keep a new book and write it down.
(11:55) Put a date and write it down. There should be journaling every single day. So when you're writing there is a certain reflection which happens and you might be writing today a certain understanding right and you might have forgotten that after 5 days when you refer back and instantly you will connect to that right >> understood >> so writing is actually a good practice >> thank you sir that helps >> so yes Nulanch >> hello masters I'm nirmala from London master is there a particular reason why you want us to read the book autobiography of
(12:28) Paramahamsa Yuan is there any I'm just curious that's all >> that you know before you get into the western authors it is best you read the Indian yogis first so that your foundation your understanding there is a right spiritual understanding and then you can build the superructure on it okay >> okay >> autobiography of a yogi is a story how a sincere student should be and the trust factor so in the autobiography of yogi He's like a happy golucky child.
(13:00) But the one thing he knows is he trusts the universe. The trust factor is so high and he trusts in the divine. So that is very fundamental that is very foundational. See when I'm teaching now I'm not I don't know what is the next word I'm going to speak. It might sound funny. I don't prepare any notes. I don't read any books to teach.
(13:22) I just make myself available. Totally surrendered being in the present moment. and trusting the process and the words flow through me, the wisdom flows through me. Of course, I won't call it as channeling that somebody else is speaking through me. It is my own higher self guiding me to speak. So, this is what I call it as a flow experience and every teacher needs this flow experience especially a spiritual teacher and that is the beauty of it.
(13:50) See if I read some books and if I repeat the same thing then what is the difference between me and a parrot? The parrot also can repeat but something is coming dynamic in this moment. So there is a certain energy, there is a certain vibe and there is a certain beauty. So this flow experience is very very important for a teacher.
(14:11) For a good teacher the good teacher is totally dynamic. When I say a good teacher that means a real teacher. A real teacher is always dynamic. For a good teacher he responds to the energy around him. He will pick up the energy of the participants. He will pick up the energy of the classroom and he knows what is needed at that moment and he will deliver it not from his mind space but from his soul space.
(14:37) So reading these books living with the Himalayan masters autobiography yogi reading these books gives you the right platform to see the vastness of this creation to understand the magic of this life and to trust the process. So then you are alive. You are really alive because you are no more sticking onto any dogmas.
(15:02) You are no more sticking on to any belief system. For a spiritual teacher, it is very important. You are not teaching out of the belief system but you are teaching out of your own knowing. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> All right. So thank you very much. Namaste to all.
