(00:00) How can a male honeybee die just seconds after mating? In a honeybee colony, the male bee is called a drone. >> [music] >> Its entire adult purpose is reproduction. When a young queen is ready, she leaves the hive for a mating [music] flight high in the air. Drones from different colonies chase her in midair, and only the fastest one gets [music] the chance to mate.
(00:23) But this is where the process turns extreme. As the drone mates with the queen, his reproductive organ, called the endophallus, is forced outward by [music] intense internal pressure. He transfers his reproductive cells into the queen at high speed. But during this process, that organ is torn away from his body. Part of his abdominal tissue is ripped open, and the drone falls away fatally injured.
(00:46) He usually dies almost immediately after mating. The queen, however, survives and may mate with multiple drones during the same flight. She stores those reproductive cells inside a special organ called the spermatheca, >> [music] >> and can use them for years to produce an entire colony.
(01:04) So, for the drone, mating is not just the end of his mission. It is the end of his life.
