Title: When Kundalini Goes Wrong - Real Documented Cases (Part 2)
Author Name: Vismaya
Description: What happens when an ancient energy activates in your body at the most unexpected time and situation, without warning and you have no idea what it is?
In this video, we explore the real, undocumented cases of spontaneous Kundalini awakening — the ones that weren't planned, weren't guided, and completely overtook the people they happened to.
And the most disturbing part?
Many of them never practiced Kundalini, yoga, or meditation at all.
So, Could Kundalini be something biological built into the human system itself?
Can extreme experiences force open states the body normally keeps closed?
And why do ancient texts repeatedly warn about this process?
⚠️ Kundalini is not a trend. It is not a breath work session. The ancient texts are clear — approached without preparation and guidance, this energy does not illuminate. It consumes.

(00:00) Childbirth is probably the last place you would expect the Kundalini to get triggered, but for this woman, it happened right in the delivery room. Her name is Christina Grof. While giving birth, she felt something very unusual. She started having tremors, weird visions, and she started feeling out of control.
(00:17) When she consulted doctors, they diagnosed her with postpartum complication and gave her medicines, which made her condition even worse. In part one, we saw cases where people had Kundalini awakening due to specific practices, meditation, or absence of guru. Today, we're going to explore a series of profound research cases and terrifying real-life accounts where this powerful energy got triggered in the most unexpected situations.
(00:44) In part one, we noticed that every trigger had some kind of logic to it. Someone pushed too hard in meditation. Someone practiced without a teacher. You could at least trace a line between what they did and what happened to them. But that line can be blurred, too, because Kundalini can be triggered by anything extreme.
(01:02) The most common and traumatic experiences or someone in deep grief. Even a severe illness can trigger the energy. In Christina's case, it was childbirth which caused it. She had suffered for 12 years without any treatment. There were physical pain that moved through different parts of her body, temporary blindness, headaches, emotional surges so violent she couldn't manage them.
(01:23) Her sense of who she was became so unstable that she, an educated, grounded woman, could barely recognize herself anymore until she finally found a framework to understand that her body was experiencing a spiritual emergency rather than a medical breakdown. We will talk later about why intense experiences cause spiritual experiences.
(01:42) In the 1970s and '80s, Dr. Lee Sannella began collecting cases because what he was seeing didn't fit anywhere in the mental disorder. His patients' symptoms were too consistent in pattern to be purely psychological. He eventually published his finding in a book called The Kundalini Experience, where he documented a cluster of symptoms appearing across completely unrelated patients.
(02:03) People who shared nothing in common except the experience. Crawling sensation moving upward along the spine, inner lights flashing with eyes closed, involuntary body movements, shaking, extreme heat or cold shooting through the torso, and in several cases a complete temporary dissolution of personal identity.
(02:21) Sanella called it physio-kundalini. And he argued that what was happening to these people was not a breakdown. It was a biological process. One that the body was attempting to complete and couldn't. But what's shocking is that several of his cases were triggered by nothing spiritual at all. One woman's experience began after a car accident.
(02:40) Another's began during a period of extreme grief after losing his child. One began during routine surgery under general anesthesia. And this is documented. The ancient texts say Kundalini should be awakened carefully, but Sanella's cases suggest trauma, shock, illness, anything can disturb it. And the person going through this has no [music] language for what is happening to them.
(03:01) They go to neurologists, psychiatrists, they're given medication that doesn't help. In some cases, medications makes it worse. Because what body is trying to complete, the drug suppress it. At this point you could argue that these people suffered because they were unprepared. They didn't have a teacher or any understanding of what was happening to them.
(03:22) But Bonnie Greenwell's case challenges that explanation. She was a psychotherapist, educated, grounded, professionally trained in the workings of the human mind. She had been meditating seriously for years and also had a teacher. She had done things the way they were supposed to be done. And then in her late 30s, it began. Her spine felt like it had been plugged into a current.
(03:43) Energy she described as overwhelming moved through her body day and night, not stopping when she wanted it to stop. Not responding to anything she tried. Her sleep was shattered. her sense of self became unstable in ways she as a psychotherapist knew the clinical language for, and that language gave her no comfort because she was living in something that clinical language was not built to hold.
(04:07) What made Bonnie's case unique was what she did afterward. As a psychotherapist, she documented her own experience. Then, over the next 20 years, she collected hundreds of similar cases from others. And despite all the different symptoms people reported, one thing kept showing up again and again. It was the isolation.
(04:26) Almost universally, the people she documented described the same secondary devastation, the complete inability to explain what was happening to them to anyone in their lives. Partners, family members, doctors, friends, none of them had an understanding for it. And the person going through it, no matter how articulate they were, could not make the experience legible to anyone around them.
(04:49) So, they suffered twice, once from the experience itself and once from the silence surrounding it. Greenwell eventually stabilized. She eventually became one of the foremost Western researchers on the subject. But she was explicit about this. The process took years. It extracted enormous cost. And even with her background, there were stretches where she generally did not know if she would be all right.
(05:13) She knew what it was, and it still nearly broke her. In Sanella's files, there is one case that stands apart from all the others. A construction worker who began experiencing the full Kundalini symptom cluster following a near-death experience after a workplace accident. Electric current sensation in the spine, rising heat, inner light, involuntary tremors, auditory phenomena, sound inside the skull that had no external source.
(05:40) He had never heard the word Kundalini. He did not know what chakras were. He had no framework at all, neither spiritual nor religious. And yet, what he was experiencing matched point to point what the Yoga Kundalini Upanishad describes, what Gopi Krishna, Iren Tweedie, and Bonnie Greenwell described to a man who didn't know any of that existed.
(06:00) Sanella used this case specifically to argue that this process is something biological, something built into the architecture of the human body itself, something that can be activated by the right conditions regardless of whether the person knew to look for it, wanted it, prepared for it or believed in it at all.
(06:18) And the reason why would a grief or surgery trigger something that ancient texts describe as a deeply spiritual process? One possible explanation is that when someone goes through an extremely intense experience, human beings reset back to a kind of a default state. They are as intense and open as they can be. That can open something in people who are already more aware and sensitive.
(06:41) When that openness is there, certain possibilities begin to manifest. Because for Kundalini to get triggered, all it really requires are the right conditions. That's all. The ancient texts present Kundalini as a path to the highest possible human experience. But Sanella's files and Britain's research and Greenwell's cases and every account we've covered across both part of this series, they all point to the same uncomfortable truth.
(07:05) This energy doesn't ask for your consent. It doesn't check whether you're ready. It doesn't care about your spiritual credentials. The texts call her a mother. They call her intelligent. They call her the source of all liberation. But the cases tell you that she has no preference for your comfort. And for some of the people we've discussed today, the construction worker who had never meditated, the psychotherapist who knew exactly what was happening and couldn't stop it, the patients cycling through a psychiatric system that had no
(07:31) name for what they carried, the fire came without invitation. And for some of them, it never fully went. If you haven't watched part one, the case of Gopi Krishna, the Sufi mystic, and what the ancient scriptures actually warn. It is linked above. And if something in what we've covered today resonates with your own experience, leave it in the comment section.
