Transcript:
(00:00) People sometimes learn meditation through videos or by random apps, and that's completely fine. Meditation has real benefits. Even the research backs it up. But, there are some highly advanced tantric and yogic practices which can put you in an endless loop of extreme suffering, and this is documented.
(00:17) And I'm not talking about feeling a little anxious after the session. I'm talking about people who couldn't sleep for 6 days straight. People who looked in the mirror and didn't recognize themselves, and those who ended up in the emergency room. So, today in this video, we are going to talk about the risks of performing advanced spiritual practices without an upper hand.
(00:36) Real cases of those who suffered this, and what you can do to make sure this never happens to you. Now, before we get into the cases, let's first understand why specific practices are different from regular 10-minute morning meditation. Well, basic meditation like breathwork, simple mindfulness, gently settles the mind without disturbing your system too much.
(00:58) For most people, it is safe and grounding. But, performing highly advanced tantric and yogic practices like intensive vipassana, kundalini activation, deep samadhi practices without the proper foundation of a qualified guru is like deliberately putting your finger in a high-voltage socket.
(01:15) At that level, you're dealing with very powerful internal energy. And if it's not handled slowly and steadily, the life force can become destructive to the practitioner. While these traditions offer pathways to spiritual evolution, but the risks of improper practice are severe. It can potentially lead to physical disease, mental instability, and energetic collapse, which is exactly what happened to a man in his 30s.
(01:37) One day, he suddenly decided to practice vipassana meditation intensively at home, completely alone. And initially, it was going all good for 4 days. Then on day five, his condition got so bad that his family had to bring him to emergency room. He became deeply suspicious of everyone around him. His behavior turned erratic and aggressive in ways completely unlike his normal self.
(02:01) He couldn't sleep for several days. The doctors diagnosed him with acute psychosis. Now, in Ayurveda, this kind of breakdown is called Unmad. It describes exactly what happened to this man. The nervous system gets so overwhelmed that the mind starts losing touch with reality, which eventually leads to mental instability. And once it gets to that point, coming back is not quick.
(02:22) And for some people, it takes years. Advanced practices can give powerful transformation, but the same without preparation can only create chaos. It can start to disrupt the body at a deeper level, which can create subtle imbalances within the system. Over time, this can drain the body's core strength, which can lead to long-term health issues, and in extreme cases, it becomes life-threatening.
(02:42) If we talk in the context of Tantra, where powerful wild deities are involved, even the smallest error can cause these powerful forces to backfire on the practitioner. And this is because when you are working with fierce deities on the Tantric path, the first and most non-negotiable requirement is fearlessness.
(03:02) Because these practices will genuinely test your grip on reality. We are talking about sitting completely alone in total darkness for extended periods and doing complex rituals. Going to places where an ordinary person wouldn't dare stand for 5 minutes. And in that environment, invoking deities whose very image is designed to trigger the deepest fear a human being can feel.
(03:24) To do any of this, you require a level of mastery over the mind, body, and emotions. In such practices, there is no scope of even the smallest of mistake. In some cases, people who attempted these practices without proper understanding found themselves in life-threatening situations, and in the cases where they survived, they have lived a life full of suffering.
(03:43) So, the next obvious question is, if these practices are this powerful, how are they supposed to be done safely? And that is where the concept of upper hand comes in. Advanced practices, especially anything involving Kundalini awakening, should never be attempted without a guru.
(04:01) Those practices can be extremely intense, and if something is off, they can overwhelm a person very quickly. It can take the practitioner right out out of their ordinary mental stability and their grip on reality. The guru is the person who makes sure that doesn't happen. So, the first and foremost reason one should perform such practice under a guru is safety.
(04:20) The second reason is preparation, which most people overlook. You don't just sit down and start advanced pranayama or energy work. Before you even qualify to attempt those practices, you're expected to have already mastered physical postures, completed specific internal cleansing techniques, and maintained a sattvic diet.
(04:39) Because it is the foundation the advanced work is built on. And if you have a real guru, he will, at first place, not let you jump to anything which you are not prepared for. The third reason is grace. It means the transmission, the timing, the recognition of when a student is ready. These things don't come from a book or an app.
(04:57) They come from a living teacher who has walked the [music] path themselves, who can see where you actually are, and carries the responsibility of your safety as their own. As the Shiva Samhita says, the guru's instruction is the difference between useful practice and painful practice. Without that guidance, the seeker can easily misunderstand the path.
(05:15) The Katha Upanishad describes that because the truth is subtle, it is very rare to find a truly skillful teacher. So, when these texts speak about a guru, they mean a qualified guide who knows what the method is, the limits, and the risks, not just someone claiming spiritual power. Now, what to do in case a practitioner experience a spiritual emergency, a negative side effect of advanced practices? Well, there are some simple yogic and Ayurvedic steps you can follow to get better.
(05:46) The first step is stop all yogic practices, spiritual techniques, and energy work completely. When the system is overwhelmed, the single most helpful thing you can do in that moment is give it nothing more to process. Then focus on rebuilding the inner strength through food and environment. Create a sattvic space around yourself, quiet, peaceful, as close to nature as possible.
(06:08) No overstimulation, loud environments, or chaotic schedules. The nervous system needs stillness to repair itself. Many people mentioned seva [music] in the comment section of our last video. This is also very important tool to get your mind out of intense experiences and relax. There are also specific body-based therapies that are traditionally used in this kind of situation as well.
(06:28) And while most intense practices [music] should be paused, yoga nidra is often treated as special exception because it is gentle, guided practice of deep relaxation. The idea is that it does not push the system further. It helps the body relax enough for its own healing process to begin. You can also take help from specific herbs, but it's very important to note that it is highly advised to seek expert treatment in case of discomfort or emergency.
(06:54) So, the point is not to be scared of spirituality. The point is to understand that not everything is meant to be done casually. There is a big difference between a 10-minute meditation for calmness and practices that directly interfere with deeper layer of your mind and energy system. These traditions were never designed to be experimented with alone or rushed through just because we feel curious or impatient.
(07:17) If done the right way with proper guidance, preparation, and timing, [music] they can be deeply transformative. But if done carelessly, they can do more harm than good. So, instead of chasing intensity, focus on stability. Instead of jumping ahead, build your foundation, and most importantly, respect the process because in spirituality, moving slow is not a weakness.
(07:39) It's what makes you grow. That patience is what allows you to go further. The people who truly transform through these practices were never the ones who rushed. They were the ones who showed up consistently, humbly, and with full respect for what they were stepping into. That is the real secret, not speed, not intensity.
(07:58) Just trust the process and the process will take care of you.
