Title: Why Are Young Indians Collapsing? The Truth Behind Garba Deaths
Author Name: Ryan Fernando
Description: We are seeing a disturbing trend of cardiac arrest deaths during Garba celebrations. Understanding these risks is vital for safety.
This video examines the recent reports of ten fatalities in a single day during festive events, affecting individuals from teenagers to middle-aged participants. It highlights the urgent need to address this widespread health concern as we enjoy our cultural traditions. By looking at the physiological strain of these celebrations, we can identify better ways to manage physical exertion.
My goal is to provide clarity on why these cardiac arrest events are occurring during high-energy festivities. Awareness of your own limits and recognising early warning signs are critical for preventive health. Proper nutrition and hydration play a significant role in maintaining heart health when you are active for extended periods.
The garba-related incidents and figures shared here are from Navratri 2023 and earlier reports, and do not refer to this year's celebrations.

Transcript:
(00:00) This year Garba nights have turned into a nightmare. 10 deaths due to cardiac arrest have been reported in a matter of 24 hours and all of these happened during Garba events. >> Victims range from teenagers to the middle-aged. >> Reports say the 108 [music] emergency ambulance services in Gujarat received 521 calls for heart-related issues.
(00:21) >> I have lost my son today. I hope the same does not happen to anybody else. >> Has anyone in your family passed away suddenly at a young age? [music] Do you actually know Garba didn't create the problem. It just exposed what was already there. And here's what should worry all of us. Roughly three out of every 10 of these people are under 40.
(00:46) So tell me honestly, should even one person [music] die doing something that's meant to celebrate life? So let me tell you who this happened to and I promise you you'll be surprised because these are not the people we picture when we hear heart attack. Try this. Someone says heart attack. Who comes to your mind? A 60-year-old uncle with big belly, BP tablets, [music] a cigarette in his hand. Okay.
(01:09) Now look at this list. The youngest 13-years-old, the boy Nivado Dora. He was cycling home from Garba, fell, a small injury. His family gave him some medication and put him to bed. He never woke up. 17-years-old, Kapav Dwanch, a class 12 student. He was mid-Garba when his nose started bleeding and he went down. His parents were at different Garba across town.
(01:32) By the time they reached the hospital it was too late. Pause for a second. Is there a 17-year-old in your house? An engineering student. He'd been going to Garba classes for 2 months practicing for Navratri. His trainer said he was doing really well and then he collapsed [music] in the middle of a step at a party plot outside Ahmedabad in the early hours of the morning.
(01:53) 31-year-old Navsari. So tell me how many of these people would you have called a heart patient? And it isn't only young men. In Rajkot, a 47-year-old woman felt uneasy after Garba and collapsed. In Porbandar, a 46-year-old man. I'm 51. These people were either my age or a lot younger than me. >> [music] >> Are you seeing the pattern? Teens, 20s, 30s, 40s.
(02:17) These were the people with the most [music] energy in the circle, the ones you'd look and think, "Wow, this person is so fit." So, the question is, why? Why is this happening? And that too, to young people. Let me tell you what I think. One, no workout all year, then all in one night. Be honest with me, how many days did you work [music] out in the last 6 months? Most of us sit at a desk all year.
(02:41) When Navratri comes and suddenly we're spinning, jumping, clapping for 3-4 hours nonstop. Your heart goes from zero to 100 overnight. Actually, [music] not 100, 170, 180. It's like running a marathon without a single day of practice. Your heart [music] wasn't ready for that. Two, closed back spaces. A lot of Garbas are now happening in halls, [music] banquets, and covered grounds.
(03:02) Hundreds of people, lights, heat, and very little fresh air. Your body's working twice as hard just to cool itself down. Have you ever stepped out of a Garba hall and felt like you could finally breathe? Three, no hydration. [music] You're sweating buckets for hours, and how much water are you drinking? A few sips between the rounds, maybe? When you lose that much of water and salt, your blood gets thicker, your heart has to pump harder.
(03:25) And tiredness and no sleep for 9 nights, and the pressure just keeps on building. Four, and this is the scariest one. Nobody knew. Many of the young people may have had a heart problem, but they didn't know about it. A rhythm issue, a weak spot, something that they were born with, something that runs in the family.
(03:45) No symptoms, no checkup. Nobody has ever told them. In fact, when ICMR studied sudden deaths in young Indians, [music] one of the biggest risk factors they found was a family history of sudden death. [music] So, think about it. Has anyone in your family passed away suddenly at a young age? Do you actually know? Garba didn't create the problem.
(04:05) It just exposed what was already there. Now, listen. I'm not asking you to stop dancing. Please dance [music] all nine nights. Just do these five things. One, don't go from zero to 100. If you haven't worked out in months, start walking now, even 20 to 30 minutes of brisk [music] walking every day.
(04:23) A week or two before Navratri gets your heart ready. And on the floor, dance at your own pace. Two or three songs, then take a break. You don't need to match everyone's energy or choreography. Nobody's giving out medals for [music] the last one standing. Number two, choose your venue wisely. If you have a choice, pick an open ground over a packed hall.
(04:41) And if you're inside and it feels hot and stuffy, step out for fresh air between [music] the rounds. Even if it feels hard to breathe in there, it's going to be even harder on your heart. Listen to your body. Number three, hydrate, eat, and skip the alcohol. Yep, skip the alcohol. Carry your own water bottle, maybe electrolytes, and sip between the break.
(04:59) For me, when you're sweating a lot, adding electrolytes, even simple salted nimbu pani, does work. I have one chase as an isotonic beverage. That's something that I've given out at every Navratri to all my friends. Like, here, [music] have this and party and be merry. Now, eat a proper meal before you go.
(05:17) Not only hydrate. Never dance for hours on an empty stomach because you need the carbs, you need the energy. And please, kind of skip that alcohol. It dehydrates you even more. [music] And binge drinking was also one of the risk factors that ICMR found out. That's the Indian Council of Medical Research. So, four, you need to get checked if there's any doubt.
(05:37) If someone in your family passed away at a sudden young age, or if you've ever had chest pains, fainting, or racing heart for no reason, sudden sweats, go see a doctor and get [music] a basic heart checkup done before you step into that circle. It's a small test. Don't say that it won't happen to me. Test. And if everything is clear, then you know it won't happen to you.
(05:55) This is what you can do to save a life. Five, listen to your body and look out for each other. Chest discomfort, dizziness, breathlessness that doesn't feel normal, please stop. Not after this song, right now. Sit down and get medical help. When you reach the venue, find out where the medical desk or ambulance is.
(06:14) And just [music] in case, if your friends are feeling a little off, don't pull them back into the circle. Sit with them. Remember that lamp in the middle of the circle, the one that [music] stands for life? Let's make sure every single person dancing around it goes home safe. So, dance, celebrate, [music] enjoy every night. Just come back home too.
(06:32) And if you're wondering what to eat during Navratri, especially if you're fasting and dancing, I've actually made a full video on that. The link is somewhere here on the screen or in the description below. Tell me in the comment section which of these five tips [music] that you will actually follow this year. And by the way, if you've got that pretty dress on or you look smart in that outfit, guys, send a picture across in the comments [music] below of you dancing and enjoying your Navratri this year.
