(00:02) Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurudevo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha. Greetings to all the devotees. Today’s video is about the verses of Vemana, which are truly wonderful. They were written for the welfare of the world; he poured all his experience into the form of these verses.
(00:28) Therefore, the intention of this video is to understand their inner meaning, grasp what Vemana wants to convey, and apply it to achieve great results. Now, let us read a couple of his verses here and understand their core meaning. These verses are simple four-line stanzas that describe how great souls are; they appear simple, but talking to them is deeply profound, which is the experience he shares.
(01:04) Let us read these verses one by one as they are quite simple. A black pepper seed looks black on the outside, but when bitten, it stings with spice; such is the essence of virtuous people, O Vemana. How beautifully he has explained this to us! "A pepper seed looks black outside, but bites when chewed; such is the essence of the noble," means that great souls appear
(01:53) very simple. The meaning behind this is that nowadays, there are people who are masters of rhetoric; they learn scriptures, display scholarship, quote grand shlokas, and pretend to possess great wisdom. But truly wise people are simple, they do not seek attention, they remain in a state of inner fullness and joy, and they live simply.
(02:30) People often do not even realize that such a person is actually wise. Here, Vemana says that a pepper seed looks black on the outside. If one thinks, " It’s just black, what can it do?", they will know the truth once they bite into it. We say, "Wow, how spicy it is! "; we know that a pepper seed is inherently pungent.
(02:55) When you consume it , the intensity of its spice is felt deeply. Likewise, with great souls, even if they appear simple, talking to them is just as intense and profound. " Wow, what deep wisdom!""What profound insights they are sharing with us!" The realization that their words, which seem simple, actually go very deep— when we spend time talking to them in wonder, that is how a great soul is.
(03:23) The pepper seed stings; how is the essence of the noble ones like that? Because many people cannot engage with noble souls, as they do not recognize them because they are so simple. If we do engage and get to know them, there are great benefits for us. They teach us many profound and deep matters.
(03:47) We can move forward in life by following that. But because we fail to recognize them, we miss out on many such people. We follow those who are masters of mere words and end up wasting our time. This is because we do not know who is truly wise and who is just a master of rhetoric. Because we lack that discernment, that wisdom to recognize the truth, we continue to waste our time.
(04:16) The great souls say the same; this verse tells us that only if we are calm can we recognize who the true noble souls are. The next verse is... about how one should be to become a great soul, comparing it to something else. A "vitu" refers to a philanderer; this poem explains to us what he is like. Let us understand the poem and its inner meaning: "Like a woman who waits with her heart on the street for her lover, one should yearn for the Supreme; forgetting all qualities,
(05:04) observe and see, Vishwadabhirama Vinura Vema." This is a bit complex in terms of its wisdom; "vitu" means a lover. When a lover says he will come at a certain time, a woman in love will constantly have the feeling that he is about to arrive. The nature of her feelings for her lover is such that thoughts of him are constantly running through her mind.
(05:46) Thinking he would come at a specific time, she looks out from the window with focused attention, regardless of what other tasks she is doing. That is, just as a mother watches over her child with concentration—wondering if he is sleeping, playing, or what he needs— and keeps that in her mind while doing anything else, when a woman is given a time by her lover, she looks out onto the streets asking, "When is he coming? ""When is he coming?" That same thought and that same gaze, looking out from the windows, is what happens with that
(06:21) girl. The reason it is compared that way is because the characteristics of that state are exactly like that. How lovers are is that there is nothing else, there is only one single thought. It is talking about concentration there . Meaning, that woman asks, "When, when will he finally come?" As she keeps her heart fixed and looks out from the streets, the point here is that a wise person should similarly yearn for the Supreme; if you keep your focus on the Almighty always, it will definitely...
(07:02) Yield results, they say. Even though this poem has complexities, it is all about concentration! Just as a mother’s thoughts are on her child regardless of what work she does; afterwards...A "mumukshu," one who desires the Almighty, should constantly be in that same state of awareness. Vemana says that whatever work a person does, they should remain focused on their inner target, whatever that goal may be.
(07:39) Otherwise, the illusion (maya) will consume you at every step, and you will not be able to move forward. You must constantly remain immersed in that . Whatever you do, have that same thought; while eating, walking, keep that same thought—from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep, if your mind flows with that kind of concentration, then definitely one day you will know your own true nature, says our Vemana in this poetic form.
(08:19) " Like the woman who waits with her heart on the street for her lover, one must yearn for the Supreme; forget all qualities and observe." The main sentence here again is that you must forget all qualities to observe, meaning with concentration. Qualities ( gunas) are the most dangerous things for us.
(08:44) The three qualities of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas; even though Sattva is very good, it still creates some waves. Rajas is indeed very dangerous. Tamas keeps us immersed in ignorance, where we don't know anything; it creates a situation where we don't even know where we are headed. Rajas makes our mind race, while Sattva holds it back a little.
(09:11) But it is said that one should be in a state of pure Sattva. In all ways, constantly forgetting these qualities and focusing, why do I keep repeating this? Because if our mind is to change, these are the only processes . Without these, you cannot move forward. To progress, your qualities must change, and as they do, the truth will be revealed as it is.
(09:40) You must recognize that, and when you do, the essence within you will be understood. For that to be understood, all these troubling matters must be distanced, and to distance them, you must make an effort. How to make that effort? With focus, just as that devotee did, if you also continuously apply your mind and remain in that state, the poem says that one day you will know your true nature and become blissful.
(10:18) Repeating it over and over, even ten times, is not wrong because—We are falling behind. Even after a whole lifetime, we still don't understand. Since we are in such illusion, repeating it is not wrong; it is about the Almighty, because that is the purpose of our life . Therefore, this poem explains it to us very clearly.
(10:47) Another poem is— " Tappulennuvaru tandopatandambu urivijanulakella undu tappu, tappulennuvaru tama tappulerugarayya Vishwadabhirama Vinuravema!" Here, it means that we have developed a habit of pointing out others 'faults. It has become easy, it is not a difficult task at all. But we cannot see our own faults.
(11:27) Here, it says, "Those who count faults are many." There are millions, even crores, who are in such a hurry to count faults; they are very enthusiastic, saying, "Those who count faults are everywhere in this world." These people, whoever they are in this world, are always making mistakes somewhere. But if someone else makes a mistake, they point it out.
(11:53) If they make a mistake themselves, they keep hiding it. This is the illusion; what greater illusion can there be? That is why the great soul said, "Why do you realize that and still criticize others in haste?" When you do the same thing, you justify it, but when others do it, you don't justify it, instead, you point it out.
(12:16) This is a very beautiful poem. If we understand this and put it into practice, it will be very useful. "Those who count faults are many, for mistakes exist in everyone in this world." They do not know their own mistakes! Those who point out faults cannot see their own faults. If we realize our own mistakes and correct them, we won't pay much attention to others' problems.
(12:47) Because we have so much trash and faults of our own, one should try to change those faults. Here , our own faults don't appear as faults ; they look like virtues to us. Whoever they are, they remain fond of them. No matter how many mistakes a person makes , they cannot blame themselves; they keep justifying them.
(13:09) If someone else makes a mistake, they immediately tell ten people and point it out. Because this has become a habit, we speak about it so quickly. Change is needed in everything here; if we observe everything instead of just practicing what we did in the past, everything will be understood. If a person truly realizes that even while committing a mistake, they will have to experience the consequences, they would not make those mistakes.
(13:49) Whenever you look—One would always run toward the truth, because this selfish path will eventually come back to us and we have to experience it. These selfish actions that exist, we definitely have to experience them ourselves. If a person fully understands that even if someone else suffers temporarily, it will eventually come back to us, they will be careful.
(14:18) They will be careful not to repeat such mistakes and will remain in good intentions. That is why they tell us all these things, and the reason they tell us these verses is...that is, the To bring about a little change, uh, we can change ourselves once we realize it. People are unaware of the reality and are deceiving one another in this world.
(14:46) The reason I keep saying repeatedly that we want to be great and above everyone else is that if our mind changes, we will attain that peace; because we are running thinking that the happiness might be outside, but we don't even know where we are running to . Why are we running? Because others are running, others are buying cars, buying buildings, earning huge sums of lakhs and crores, having bank balances, holding positions, and getting great respect.
(15:22) Many people think that if they have these bungalows, buildings, wealth , and status, there is great happiness in them and people will respect us; catching onto that, they are running after it. In reality, if we look, those who have huge buildings and are wealthy , they are...They are lacking satisfaction, they are restless, they do not have inner peace; people with money can do deeds, help nature, perform rituals and sacrifices, but that money itself is not giving them happiness.
(16:04) If money gave happiness, they would be happy and comfortable; they are going to pilgrimage sites, visiting gurus, going to temples and shrines, and getting rituals done because they don't have peace and want it; many who have earned huge money have earned it with passion and desire, so they always receive the results of that passion. It leads to restlessness.
(16:28) Everyone is going everywhere to find where peace can be found; peace is not outside, it is within, it has nothing to do with money, wealth, status, or being praised by ten people; it is inside our own body, and if we go within the body, that cheerfulness, calmness, joy, and happiness that is inside becomes available to us.
(17:01) For it to become available, we must keep bringing that change within ourselves. Whatever we do or walk, all these are merely mental states and characteristics that keep revolving either inside or outside. If the mind, filled with passion, is chaotic, it will keep wandering outside and cannot go inward; to go inward, you need cheerfulness, you need to be sattvic, and your mind must be still.
(17:31) You might get bored if I tell these things in many videos, but even if you get bored, that is what we must do; that is why great souls also spoke about one thing: know your own nature; Ramana Maharshi says it is enough if you know who you are. To know who you are, you must go inward; Ramana Maharshi went inward, remained calm, remained silent, and constantly stayed in that state, so he knew who he was; that is why Ramana Maharshi says it is not outside, knowing who you are is enough, he stated it simply in two points. We hold
(18:07) onto that, and "Aha!" Many people speak with the feeling, "I have no death, no birth anymore." These are all processes . As long as your mind does not change, you will keep doing the same things you did in the past. That is why one must keep changing slowly here. It’s like stairs; you must climb one step at a time, one step at a time.
(18:31) Because your body will experience vibrations, and it will feel unsettled. As you ignite the fire, as your karma burns in the fire of meditation, your body will vibrate. Many other kinds of experiences will come; you must keep observing them and moving forward, moving forward, moving forward.
(18:49) Why is this being repeated over and over? Because it is the process! It is not outside; it is within, in solitude. You must always give it time; if you don’t, it will leave you unsettled, and you will be back to square one. Now, what have all these people told us? To recognize that , to recognize the great souls, is not an easy task.
(19:14) Unless the mind stops and we communicate with them, we cannot recognize them. There are many benefits to recognizing them; they show us the right path, making it easier for us to proceed. After that, you need concentration. What these verses say is that if you maintain a steady state of focus and clear goals, you have a better chance of easily experiencing the Divine.
(19:40) We are always in such a hurry to point out others 'mistakes. We remain unaware of the mistakes we make ourselves. If we realize our own mistakes, we would not point out the mistakes of others. Because we commit even more mistakes than them, we wouldn't want to talk about it. It is because we do not know everything fully .
(20:03) As long as we hide our own faults and keep highlighting the faults of others, we will not see things as they truly are. All those great souls said these things with the intention that whatever you practice, it will return to you; so , if we understand this well and change our minds, it would be much better. So, with the feeling that it would be better if you also changed a little bit , I take my leave. Jai Gurudatta
