(00:00) They say that Gandharvas sometimes incarnate and take human birth in order to generate bacti and devotion. The legend Ms. Suba Lakshmi G is perhaps one such Gandharva. I welcome her grandson Shin Nasan G and her great granddaughter Aishwara. If you can tell us some certain experiences of MS with Tirupati Balaji.
(00:25) What about Satyas Sai Baba? I've heard there was a special connection. She was a extraordinary divine personality. Has she interacted with Latam Mangeshkar ever? >> Sarrojani Naidu made a very historic statement. She said that I want this voice of MS to go to every corner of the country so that people realize what a great superstar we have in our midst.
(00:46) >> People were like completely mesmerized and they actually saw Miraabai in her. So when she falls down and her soul goes merges with Krishna, Lord Krishna in that particular scene she did not just fall down she fainted. She really fainted when the scene was taking place. So this was in uh narrated to me by my grandmother.
(01:06) >> Uh Abdul Kalam was a great fan of karnatic music >> and in particular he was a great fan of my grandmother. She was cremated at the Bessenagar crematorium. What happened was a real miracle. Suddenly from nowhere as we were taking the body and you know placing it on the truck. They say that gandharvas the celestial musicians sometimes incarnate and take human birth in order to generate bacti and devotion in the earth beings.
(01:48) And in my humble opinion the legend Ms. Suba Lakmi G is perhaps one such Gandharva. In today's podcast I'm going to be discussing her mystical and magical life, her spiritual experiences and of course her godly witnesses. And for the same I welcome her grandson Shri Nasen G and her great granddaughter Aishwara. >> Namaste.
(02:12) >> Namaste. >> I also have to tell my audience that Aishwara along with her younger sister Sara uh they both are karnatak singers uh and they are carrying forth the legacy of Ms. Subalakmi G they are very popular. So um one would assume you know that there must be a very special connection with Tirupati Balaja G and yes with MS subalmi G.
(02:38) So if you can tell us some certain experiences of MS with Tupati Balaj I think my audience would really love that. uh by a sheer coincidence >> in the last century >> therapy devastanam while doing a renovation work in the temple >> discovered copper plates which contained compositions of anamachara >> okay >> I think around 25,000 compositions >> 25,000 compositions okay which dated back how many years >> it was maybe around 700 years back it was composed >> wow So this was something which was providential >> and they decided that uh these should be
(03:21) recorded by MS to make it more popular. >> At that time particularly my grandparents were having a little financial crisis having sold the palatial kulki gardens and they were living in a rented house. >> Okay. >> So Dr. PVRK Prasad was deputed by TTD to go to u the Sadasams my grandfather and grandmother and explain to them about this project.
(03:54) It was sometime in 1980. >> Okay. >> And this story is quite popular on social media also. >> Okay. >> Where PBRK Prasad carries a huge portrait of Lord Baji and visits my grandparents. Initially my grandfather was very hesitant because the Telugu of that era was much more difficult. >> And um my grandmother also was in her mid60s >> and he felt that it should not uh this should not be a strain on her.
(04:26) >> Okay. >> So what he did was initially he refused. He said why should you >> trouble her at this age and he said uh thank you for the offer but I don't think MS sama will be able to sing this >> a >> and by providence my grandmother entered the room >> and she saw the huge portrait of Lord Balaji and she immediately prostrated >> and Dr.
(04:53) Dr. PBRK Prasad mentioned about this project to her and she immediately said I will sing. >> Amazing. So that's how it started and uh HMV which was a very famous recording company in those days >> was uh given the task of recording the suprabatham >> and my grandmother and mother Radha Vishnadan uh very diligently learned this for around a year with the help of uh very great Sanskrit scholars like Anatina Mangar and also Agnihotam Tatachara India who are there on hand to correct their pronunciation etc.
(05:34) >> What you hear in the superbatam rendered by my grandmother and mother is a very perfect rendition. There will be absolutely no mistakes at all. >> And they practiced for around 10 months with great diligence to the such an extent that they could recite this on wrote. They knew the meaning of every verse and they could uh recite it without even reference to any uh papers or books.
(06:01) >> Wow, that's amazing. >> There is a small incident to this also that it was almost getting ready for recording. But my grandmother being the perfectionist that she is, she was always uh postponing the event by a few days. >> The recording >> recording. >> Okay. Then my mother said uh amma it is becoming late >> after a few more days I may not be able to sing along because she was carrying me.
(06:28) >> Okay. >> So the delivery was expected to happen anytime. >> So she said let us finish the recording as soon as possible. And so sometime in the month of June 1963 probably after 20th of June the recording was done. It was a perfect recording in the very first take was perfect and they took the second take just for a backup.
(06:54) >> Wow. >> And uh I was born after a few days. So they named me Sini Vasan after the lord of the seven hills. >> Amazing. Wow. That's an amazing story. And uh yes of course I'm also one of the biggest fans of uh Suprabatam. It's it's irreplaceable and it's timeless. >> Timeless. And one more thing is they donated all the royalties to Devastana.
(07:21) >> Okay. >> So all the royalties which my grandmother and mother earned >> from the surrendation. >> Yeah. >> Went back to the temple. See my grandparents have been great devotees of Lord Balaji right from the very beginning you know. And uh every visit to Thaiadi was a memorable incident like I have been with them I have been with my grandparents toadi on at least 50 occasions.
(07:49) >> Wow. Okay. So every time I used to go toadi with them they used to get a royal welcome from theatiala devastanum. Uh their welcome which is normally given to the president of India was accorded to them and they used to be hosted at the padmati guest house where the president used to stay. >> And usually the program was like this.
(08:13) We used to reach there sometime in the evening and we used to go for a evening dash and uh when MS used to enter the temple the huge uproar from the audience which was also waiting to go they will say that MS MS is coming MS is coming and >> um there used to be a very huge applause and people used to start taking her blessings and she used to refuse she used to say that this is the place where Lord Wenadeshwara is you should take his blessings and not my blessings.
(08:47) >> So and uh she used to walk straight from the entrance to the moolasan where Lord Wadeshwara resides and usually my mother and grandmother used to sing in front of the dity for around half an hour or an hour. I have heard uh I think Dr. Karan Singh was the former uh union minister >> mentioned in one of his books stating that he was there once before the subrabatam recording was released uh when Msama and my mother Rada recited the subraatam directly in front of the dity early morning so that was probably the first time that the
(09:29) suprabatham was recited before the dity >> it's a very emotional moment of course I was not there But just to uh give you a background to that. >> So the Tripati visits used to be extremely memorable visits. >> So coming back to the story when MS agreed to do the recording uh Dr. Prasad you know hesitantly approached >> and told uh my grandfather that uh you should uh take a compensation for that to which my grandmother vehemently refused.
(10:05) She said singing for balaji and getting a compensation I will not take a single pisa out of it. >> Then u somehow Dr. Prasad was able to convince my grandparents stating that there would be a corpus fund for this purpose. >> Okay. Because therapy devast is going to earn lakhs and crores of rupees >> by selling these casets >> and uh so we will create a corpus which will be there for lord baji only >> only the interest from that will be coming to you on a monthly basis.
(10:41) >> Oh >> so such a corpus was actually set up and uh ultimately they agreed. So in the 1980s my grandmother used to get around 5,000 rupees a month. >> This was supposed to be for a lifetime. >> M >> my mother was uh given a compensation of around 2,500 and my grandfather too was given a compensation of 1,800.
(11:07) >> This was not uh to be changed. So the this amount continued to come to them till the end of their lives. So it was almost like getting money from God. >> God himself. >> What about you? Do you have any experiences to share? >> While my grandmother taught me songs, there used to be lot of narrations of uh their experiences, how they learned the song or she would suddenly burst into a story about what actually happened when they presented the song.
(11:37) So one such incident was uh her bacti towards Kanchi Mahabara >> and this incident happened when they were in the United Nations uh while they were on a two-month tour coast to coast tour in the 1966 of the United States. So she was the very first Karnatic musician to take our Karnatic music overseas >> to the USA.
(12:04) And what happened is that the United Nations concert was towards the end of the door. And for some reason she felt very sick and she could not sing at all. And as musicians we know that if there is a cold nasal sound we can still manage but when your throat gets you know they sing sore throat. >> Sore throat it's very difficult to sing because the voice will not come out at all.
(12:30) So she had a sore throat and she was being the usual worrisome you know very nervous and uh she was all day and night worrying about the concert and it's such a big concert where there are going to be hundreds of foreign delegates >> and what she did was constantly she had a vanity box where she had the photo of Paramachara and she was constantly meditating and doing Archa for him.
(12:56) >> Okay. And even the previous day for the rehearsals it was my grandmother who went where they did stage rehearsals of how she would enter exit and um she came back and narrated this to her and still my you know party Amati was very nervous. The next day again the same thing. The throat did not get better.
(13:17) And she even uh thought to herself uh you blessed me that I would conquer this entire tour and uh I would come very victorious from >> actually before they left for the United Nations they went to KI >> and took the blessings of Mahapra >> and Mahapiraa blessed my grandparents and mother and said >> that is you would come back victorious.
(13:42) So she you know was very worried. She said you blessed me that I I would come back victorious and now I'm not even able to talk. How am I going to sing? And then it was time to leave. My grandmother told amma it is 3 program is at 3:00. You have to start getting ready now. And even then she was worried.
(14:04) She said how am I even going to sing? And there is even a video of how she enters like a superstar onto the stage. There is a focus light. She comes and she bows to all the delegates. And when she sits down and she chants home, her voice came back. And my grandmother used has told me this any number of times because every time she would tell this to me, she would have tears in her eyes and goosebump moments, you know.
(14:30) >> Amazing. >> And see the part of learning karnatic music is how deeply rooted you are to the tradition. So it is not only about singing. It is how closely you are connected to God. How you so these stories were narrated to me so that I could take forward the bacti. I would understand what the songs meant.
(14:53) So a lot of such stories were narrated by my grandmother to instill that devotion and bacti of all our cultural roots. >> Wow. Amazing. Uh this is actually a goosebump moment for me. uh there was a book released by Dr. Manmahan Singh in the year 2008 and uh on my grandmother Dr. Dr. Manm Singh said that I was part of the delegation to the United Nations in 1966 >> and I saw how MS conquered the world.
(15:28) All the delegates stood in applause. you know there was an audience of almost 1,200 >> and uh the entire audience was you know mostly foreign all foreigners very few Indians except the Indian delegation and uh so even Manm Singh gi had confirmed that this was a enormous success >> wow amazing >> and how she put the you know Indian music >> on the world map >> on the world map >> so there was a movie called Mera that was released in 1940 45 and the Hindi version was also released in 1947.
(16:05) Uh and MS Subakmi G not only acted and sang she did both in you know the movie and apparently it was soul stirring and people were like completely mesmerized and they actually saw Mira in her and your grandmother apparently played the younger Mera and Ms. Subalakmi played the older Mera. So any memories that your grandmother had or did Ms.
(16:30) Subilmi G speak to you about it any time? >> So uh my grandmother has narrated to me that uh when MS party acted she did not act she became Mera herself. See that was the she she took over the character and she imagined herself to be Mera. That was the amount of devotion she had. And when she walked through the streets of Vindavan singing the song Vinda Vanaki uh people did namaskcarams thinking that she was Mira because that was the amount of impact and people saw her as Mira.
(17:07) >> So they started falling at her feet >> as she was walking on the streets and when the shooting was going on. >> Wow. Amazing. And in the last final scene, so when she falls down and her soul goes merges with Krishna, Lord Krishna, in that particular scene, she did not just fall down, she fainted. She really fainted when the scene was taking place.
(17:32) So this was in uh narrated to me by my grandmother. >> My god. So the devotion and her feeling for the character was so strong that she actually became Mera and fainted. That is actually when uh Mira's soul merged into Darcadesh and became one with Darcadesh. So uh my god that's that's amazing incredible >> and lot of times when she sung bhajans or any song there were a lot of instances when she has cried while she was singing because that was the amount of uh bacti with which she sang and she brought out the true meaning with which the composer wrote the song the composer
(18:13) has felt something for the lord and s and she truly took it in and >> brought it out. Wow. And you were just telling me uh that Sujini Naidu >> Yes. Yes. >> said that she surrenders her title of Nightingale to MS. >> Yes. Yes. That happened during the launch of the film Mira >> and uh attending the Murat was Pandit Neu and in fact the entire cabinet of Pandit Neu Lord and Lady Mount Batton were also there.
(18:45) So this was sometime in 1947. >> Okay. And at that time Srojani Naidu made a very historic statement. She said that I want this voice of MS to go to every corner of the country so that people realize what a great superstar we have in our midst. I'm paraphrasing it but something to that effect she said >> and she also said that my I surrender my title of Nightingale to Msubaki.
(19:12) >> Amazing. What has been her interactions in terms of with other singers? Like I'm sure people are curious to know has she interacted with Latam Mangeshkar G ever? Oh yes. Uh with she has interacted with Lati and they had great admiration for each other's music >> and um Lati actually has heard some of my grandmother's recordings when she was a young budding singer and my grandmother at that time was a very famous star.
(19:47) >> Okay. >> You know in the 1940s when she used to record for Mera. >> Yes. So it's apparently I've heard that Lati Kundal Saigel and Panal Go used to listen to her music uh from the sidelines >> because the recordings used to happen sometimes in Kolkata HMBB Kolkata. >> Okay. So there are and of course my grandmother also used to have a a lot of respect for Lati's bajons and her renderings and she has told her also many times there was an occasion when I think she visited Lati in Bombay >> those days we used to call it Bombay
(20:32) >> yes >> and I presented her with a white silk sari >> okay >> because lati used to wear only white >> so my grandmother present presented her with a white sari and also when Lataji uh wanted to present uh the an award in her father's name the dinanat mangeshkar award >> mhm >> she my grandmother couldn't go to Mumbai because she was not keeping good health >> so she flew down from Mumbai and visited my grandmother at her home and presented the award >> how sweet oh my god that's so amazing >> so how MS party has impacted the lives
(21:11) of common man. So this is one such incident where a thief who stole a very wealthy house in Koramangla >> okay >> was caught after 10 months in Kybad >> okay >> and the police were very uh amused as to why this guy stole the ground floor first floor and the third floor but he left the second floor untouched. >> Okay.
(21:35) And it it was not that the second floor did not have any valuables. Very precious items were also there. And when he was asked about it, he first initially told how he would plan the robbery. He had his, you know, accomplice would go around looking for houses which do not have or which have a lot of newspapers outside >> and they would know that that family is not there.
(21:59) >> And that's how they found this house. And when they asked him there are so many valuables in the second floor why didn't you steal? So to which he said in the second floor there was a huge photo of Msama >> and to me she's like a mother and I felt very shameful to steal front of her. So this happened to be a to impact a thief you know to uh it is sort of uh >> make him not steal even though it's only the second floor >> but it is a very big thing.
(22:36) >> So basically u the house didn't belong to MS. It just had her photograph in it. >> Yes. Yes. >> Wow. >> There was a particular room >> which had a picture of MSA. M. >> So when he opened the door and found her picture, he never even bothered to check what valuables were there. He closed the door and came. >> And the capacity of my grandmother to bring out the goodness in every heart.
(23:01) >> Wow. >> Is tremendous because the moment he saw her picture, he must have probably been reminded of the suprabatam which he heard she which he also used to hear every day. >> So he respectfully closed the door and said, "I cannot steal when she's looking." >> Amazing. What about Sati Sai Baba? I heard there was a special connection with >> Yes.
(23:23) Yes. Yes. See uh my grandparents were great devotees of uh Bhagwan Sri Satis Sai Baba. You know as I told you they were having a financial crisis in the mid '70s. >> My mother used to visit you know white field >> where Baba's asham was there and have his dash. However, my grandmother could not visit due to the fact that at that particular time my grandfather was not a great believer of Baba.
(23:51) So not that he was against Baba or anything but you know he was not a great believer either. >> So the opportunity never came. So but my grandmother you know in the heart of hearts she had heard a lot of stories about Baba and his miracles. So my mother would go and have Baba's dion and also express to him that my grandmother wished to see you and all that.
(24:17) So Baba used to bless stating that the time will happen. It will come as it has to come. And so after 1977 when the Skolki gardens was sold sometimes end of 1997 I mean 1977 or maybe 1980 beginning my grandparents visited Paberti and u the moment my grandfather saw Bhagwan he burst into tears. Okay. >> You know it's a lot of pent up emotion which he had and um my Baba blessed you know both of them.
(24:54) Subakshmi you are happy? He asked that means after so long you have had a dion of me. >> And you know my it was a very memorable incident and after that you know my mother she was in actually a coma stage and there were doubts whether she would even survive. >> Oh >> and at that particular time there is no hesitation in saying that without Baba's blessings she would not have pulled through.
(25:24) There was one particular incident where you know she was on catheter and u they had removed the catheter as she was >> oh >> uh recovering but she could not pass urine at all. Oh, >> in spite and every day they used to remove the catheter and put it back because she wouldn't pass urine and actually grandparents visited Putati for this sit for the to have a dash of Baba and they explained to Baba about this problem and he said uh don't worry the urine will flow and uh it happened in a in a day or two she could pass urine.
(26:00) >> My god >> a real miracle. >> Incredible. This is absolutely America, >> amazing. There was another event which happened is that my grandfather passed away in 1999. >> She there was a call from Putarti to my grandmother's house stating that Baba wish desires that you come to puti for his birthday. >> Okay. >> Which is on November 23rd.
(26:28) >> Yes. So my grandmother uh you know hesitantly replied back stating that after uh my husband has passed away I'm not going out anywhere. So kindly uh give this message to Baba. Then Baba he sent his car from Putarti to Madras you know Bengar he said that Sublakshmi must come. >> Wow.
(27:00) and uh he sent his car so to accompany my grandmother, my wife Gita and um Sroja Atmanadan who was who is the wife of Atmanadan who looked after my grandmother for many years. >> Okay. >> And also Vishalam who was the care caregiver for my grandmother. All of them together traveled to Putaparti and they stayed there for a few days had dash of Baba.
(27:28) >> What was her age that time? >> She was 83 years old. >> I was also there. >> Yeah. Aishwara was also there. So Aishwari also went along with my grandmother in Baba's car. >> Oh wow. Amazing. >> So uh not many people will have the blessings of Baba that he sends his own car to pick up his devotey.
(27:50) So she was very blessed by Baba and there are uh you know certain there are videos on the YouTube where Baba actually holds her hand and takes her along with him you know with so much love and affection he speaks to her was a very memorable experience. >> Amazing. Um she also blessed you apparently to carry forth her legacy.
(28:14) >> So this happened uh when I was around 7 years old. She lived in Kotupuram. So uh while we lived in Kilpak and uh on Vijay Dashmi day we every year it was a ritual to go to her house and take her blessings because she was a guru right on Vijay Dashi day we go to all our guru's house to take blessings.
(28:36) So on that particular day I was very young 7 years and I had learned a song Babayami Gopala Balam and I wanted to sing it in front of her and uh this was part of uh the Balaji Panchat Namala where she has sung and it is very famous and when I sang the song uh the line came which also signifies the composer's signature >> anamachara >> anamachara >> and As her usual habit when she sings concert, she will bow.
(29:10) She will do a namaste to the composer. When she was uh listening to me, she was in bed lying down, she was bedridden. >> But still she remembered her old habits and she did a namaste. And as she did namaste, tears flowed down her eyes. >> And um she after I finished the song, I was very young. So it was not even you cannot even compare it to her version right but I don't know what she felt in her heart that she said that this girl is going to take my name forward she said in the pun she's going to carry the name >> and I did not know the magnitude of
(29:50) those words when I was young but even now when I think of it it is it gives me goosebumps and I know what a big huge responsibility it Great. And and you are definitely doing a great brilliant job. >> Thank you. >> Any uh incidents of any other personalities maybe the prime minister or somebody somebody with MS Simuli G >> she has interacted with so many prime ministers and uh you know presidents because she was such a celebrity.
(30:23) >> Yes. And >> so when uh you know the pundit Javaru used to say that you know there was a concert for the Ramak Krishna mission at New Delhi the year 1949 and it was a benefit concert and after the concert uh Pandit G was asked to speak about my grandmother and he came to the mic and said I have been asked to speak about MS Master Lakshmi today but who am I a mere prime minister before the queen of music he said >> amazing so the only other singer who got this title of night and gale of India apart from leam mangishkar gj is ms
(31:08) subakmi g uh and of course padma bushan and padma vibushan correct along with bharat ratna so I'm sure she was a f you know favorite of all the presidents and prime ministers >> yes M >> the government of India had uh on the occasion of a centinary >> Yeah. released a 100 rupee coin especially for her in her honor and the United Nations had released a special stamp on my grandmother >> you know with a picture of the 1966 concert and the government of India had a special function in the United Nations um you know anchored by the our
(31:51) representative to the United Nations uh Dr. Akbaru. So it so happened that uh on the day of the coin release we were invited by the honorable prime minister Modi G to visit his residence. >> Okay. And the moment we came in you know we said uh I mean at the moment we entered he said susswagam welcoming all of us and on behalf of the family I had uh thanked him stating that the government has done so much uh for my grandmother during the centinary year uh like minting a coin and ensuring that the United Nations released a special
(32:32) stamp on her >> to which he said that uh you know She is a Dvi. It's the duty of the government. He said to honor such a great personality like Ms. >> What about uh President Abdul Kalam uh who was that time our president? >> Uh Abdul Kalam was a great uh fan of Karnatic music >> and in particular he was a great fan of my grandmother.
(33:04) >> Okay. And so there were many instances where uh you know uh he has come to our house. There was an award institute instituted by the you know Karnatic music association of North America. >> Mhm. >> And uh four eminent personalities were honored. >> Okay. um including uh DK Pamar uh Pundit Ravish Shankar >> I think uh Pit Brim Sen Jooshi and my grandmother on that particular day my grandmother couldn't come to the function she was not keeping good health >> so the moment uh he came to know that my grandmother was not available at the
(33:50) music academy he immediately after the function took the award with him and drove straight to my grandmother's house. The name was the president of India. >> Wow. >> So he drove straight to her house and presented the award in her house and took her blessings. >> And u they also got the Baratna together the year 1998.
(34:16) >> Okay. >> They were awarded the Baratna by the president Dr. Kr Narin. >> Mhm. And uh it also you know when she passed away uh he was the president of India. >> Mhm. >> And uh our family got a phone call from Rashati Baban asking the timings of when the cremation is going to happen >> etc. So immediately he we got a message that uh please do not take the body for cremation because the president is already on the way to see her to to pay his last homage. Amazing.
(34:53) >> And he came and uh you know the service chiefs were also there. She was cremated at the Bessanagar crematorium. >> What happened was a real miracle in the sense that it was a very bright and sunny day that day. The president had come paid his homage and he had left. And now the time had come for her body to be loaded onto the army carriage >> to be taken to the crematorium.
(35:23) The suddenly from nowhere as we were taking the body and you know placing it on the truck the rain started pouring see that was a miracle because rains were not predicted for that day in it was December and usually doesn't rain in December. So right from the time of you know placing her body the casket in the army truck and taking it to the crerematorium and till the final rights were done.
(35:54) It was mildly drizzling just around that area. It was not raining anywhere else in Madras and this was also reported by the newspapers the next day as a sort of a miracle how it so happened that even the gods wept when she passed away. That's exactly why I began the podcast by saying that Gandharvas do take birth as human and I genuinely believe that Amma was a Gandharva.
(36:23) She was >> not you know the ordinary soul. She was definitely a spiritual entity some something like a goddess you know who has who took birth to probably you know invoke bi into so many millions and billions of hearts all across the world >> generations to come.
